Eight tools claim to archive websites. They don't all mean the same thing by "archive."

Some take scheduled screenshots and store them with timestamps. Others track text changes and send alerts when a word moves. A few do both, badly. And one (the Wayback Machine) isn't really a tool you control at all. Before you pick one, you need to know which category you're actually shopping in, because a change-detection service and a screenshot archiving service solve different problems even when their marketing pages sound identical.

We split the market into three buckets. Screenshot archivers (Stillio, PageCrawl, and us) capture full-page images on a schedule and keep them for months or years. Change monitors (Visualping, Distill.io, ChangeTower, Hexowatch) watch pages for differences and ping you when something shifts. Then there's the Wayback Machine, which is free, public, and captures pages on its own schedule with no guarantees about timing or completeness. If you need evidence for legal disputes or a compliance archive, the first group matters most. If you need real-time alerts when a competitor changes their pricing, the second group fits better.

Disclosure: we build Snapshot Archive, so these comparisons come from our perspective. We name where competitors do better. Stillio offers Google Drive sync and sitemap-level monitoring that we don't have yet. Distill.io runs a Chrome extension for on-the-fly tracking. Visualping handles automated text-level change detection. SA focuses on visual captures, though we archive the page's HTML alongside every screenshot, so manual text search is possible today and we plan to make it smoother.

Every comparison below includes current pricing, a feature table, and a breakdown of who each tool works best for. We cover how scheduled screenshots and visual diff work across tools, whether PDF exports with SHA-256 hashes are available, and what you actually get at each price point. For the two competitors we bump into most often, we also built dedicated head-to-head pages: Snapshot Archive vs Stillio and Snapshot Archive vs Visualping.

Pick the comparison that matches the tool on your shortlist. If you're not sure which category you need, start with the archiver comparisons (Stillio, Versionista, PageCrawl) when proof and retention matter, or the monitor comparisons (Visualping, Distill.io, ChangeTower, Hexowatch) when alerts matter. Our pricing page has the full breakdown if you want to compare costs directly. And if you'd rather see two competitors stacked against each other without us in the mix, the comparison pages do that.
